They seem to create a sense of hope despite the fundamental truth that our world is indeed broken.

In reading J. Matthew Nespoli’s book entitled Broken, I find myself staring at the depths of human despair and desperation in the city of Los Angeles. The author opens the story by introducing the reader to shocking psychological and existential realities, both past and present, by writing personal narratives of some of the main characters as they reflect upon the people and events that surround them. As the story progresses and more characters are added, these narratives continue to offer us very clear insight into the thoughts, motivations, and personalities of the protagonists.

In the movie Collateral, the main character, a cold-blooded killer played by Tom Cruise, comments on how sprawling and disconnected Los Angeles is and gives the example of a man who died while traveling in a public transportation train, passing an entire day before anybody noticed his dead body.

The movie Crash also takes place in Los Angeles, but in this case, although it may seem as though we are randomly disconnected, we are nonetheless very connected. That is to say, our thoughts and actions do make a difference in the lives of others and the community as a whole.

Likewise, Broken portrays the cold reality of living in the large metropolitan area of Los Angeles and the sometimes difficult task of finding the basic human needs of friendship, family, love, and community. As we follow the thoughts and lives of the fourteen characters that constitute this novel, this becomes very evident as they try to avoid personifying that familiar oxymoron–the lonely crowd. Each character must confront his or her frightening past and grapple with that ever-present human longing known as loneliness.

The author very skillfully brings these characters together in ways that surprise the reader. For example, he uses miscegenation, or the mixing of the blood. Amber, a black woman, was raped by a white man, and her close friend Ron, who originally betrayed her but eventually grew to love her, witnessed his mother being raped by a black man. Both of them had to rise above prejudice, forgive, and finally love. Amber had to love her child Kimberly, the offspring of the evil white man who raped her, and Ron had to love his mother in spite of watching her sexual experience with a black man as a child.

Even more interesting is how the author identifies the common cause of emotional pain for these two as rape. In this case, the man’s suffering was tantamount to that of the woman’s. It is the equality of this pain that allows Amber, a professed lesbian, to find the ability to love Ron, a white man. To the average reader, many of these details may go unnoticed, but the author should be commended for his portrayal of these details throughout the novel. He very cleverly uses heterosexuality, homosexuality, drug addictions, organized crime, race, religion, anorexia, violence, suicide, sexual crimes and perversions, human pride and vanity to delineate our connection with each other.

In the case of Jackson, outside of his desire to swallow the next pain pill, his true longing lies with his mother. When she dies, he then goes to find Beth, the mother of his child. As the saying goes, “A man cannot love a woman until he leaves his mother.” Jackson was finally ready to truly love Beth and his child, but unfortunately it was too late. Kelly had already arrived.

In Skye we find an attractive woman with beautiful musical talents, but her past has left her terribly scarred and emotionally wounded. People want to love Skye and be her friend, but the heroin addiction prevents this from happening time after time. As many of us know, something as simple as eating less chocolate or drinking less beer or coffee can seem like an insurmountable endeavor. Through Skye we are able to see the incredible amount of pain that addictions can cause, both for the individual and the people close to them.

The novel is not completely dark, however. There are both humorous and touching moments. As a result, the story moves quickly as the narrative passes from one character to the next. It leaves the reader constantly anticipating the next paragraph to see how they resolve their personal problems and to see how these characters are eventually connected.

The novel is also teeming with pithy sayings and witty comparisons that offer a clear view of contemporary America. My favorite one was “…the metabolism of a cheetah on crystal meth.” Although it was an entertaining novel on many different levels, I still feel that this is an evolving author. That is to say, some of the similes and metaphors could have been better, and although the characters in this novel were brought together extremely well, I believe there was room for slight improvement.

I believe that there is a deeper message here: the world is broken by human imperfection and sin. These sins have consequences. If we abuse the laws of nature, we eventually cause our own suffering. It is not so much that we are punished for sin, but rather that we are punished by sin. Drug use, sexual perversion, violence, and even casual sex can lead to pain and suffering in one form or another. It is also important to understand that this pain is easily passed on to subsequent generations, as seen in this novel.

More importantly, through the character of Paul, the novel manifests the reality that human sin exists everywhere, and that human beings are equally capable of doing great good or great evil.

It has been said that great literature provokes thought and critical thinking. Broken accomplishes this task. Many profound essays could be written about this novel. It can be examined on a psychological level, a religious or spiritual level, and a societal level. Are these characters psychologically broken, spiritually broken, or is it, in fact, the fault of the environment that one finds in Los Angeles?

We all understand the physical, realistic fact that if you tie two birds together, they are unable to fly. But the characters in this novel and human beings in general are always trying to deny this truth. TJ and Dylan are trying to connect with Skye. Later, TJ connects with Flora. Flora connects with TJ. Jackson tries to connect to his mother and then Beth. Dr. Salazar tries to connect with Flora. Amber connects with Ron. Ron connects with Amber. You get the picture.

There is a very deep, human need to connect with somebody, despite the fact that we understand the risks involved and know that it will limit our individual freedom. This human longing continues because we know that it is a way to hide from and temporarily forget about the brokenness and human sin that exists in the world. As we walk through life, all that we really have is each other. We are all broken, and the sense of love and community helps us to face and overcome the challenges created by that brokenness.

This was definitely a novel worth reading.

The Way To Paradise juxtaposes two stories which, in essence, deal with how people pursue ideals. It identifies the inevitable selfishness associated with a person’s obsession to achieve, how pragmatism and compromise inevitably dictate daily routine, and how fate, unpredictable and unyielding, has the ultimate say on all of our endeavours.

The two stories of The Way To Paradise are related by family. One describes how the French painter, Paul Gaugin, left his job as a mildly successful stockbroker to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. A closet painter while he acted out the humdrum of nine to five to provide for his thoroughly and properly domesticated Danish wife and five children, Paul Gaugin drooled over canvases by impressionist painters such as Manet. The latter’s nude depiction of Olympia played a significant role in crystallising Gaugin’s ambitions. A provocative and highly erotic painting it is, for sure. What Gaugin did not know, it seems, was that the sitter shared the name of his grandmother’s lesbian lover. It would add poignancy to the story if the painting’s subject was actually the grandmother’s lover, but the decades don’t add up.

Flora Tristan, Paul Gaugin’s grandma, was born into potential wealth. But she was illegitimate, her wealthy Peruvian father having sired her via a poor French mother. So she grew up in poverty. She marries. She hates sex, abhorring everything to do with the act, so the marriage to an impatient husband does not last. There is a child, but there is also violence, threats, public scenes and estrangement. Flora takes up the struggle for women’s rights, workers’ rights and socialism. She dresses as a man to research the experience of prostitutes. She travels from town to town giving presentations and speeches to guilds, assemblies of the poor and groups of women.

Both Paul Gaugin and Flora Tristan travel. The artist, of course, as we all know, went to live on various Pacific islands, where he painted most of the works that now make him famous. But at the time, the experience was far from idyllic. Having wanted to escape the constricting conventions and conservatism of France, he found it reincarnated in the officialdom that dealt with him, his poverty, and his illness, syphilis, which rendered him smelly, pussy and unsightly. On can only imagine what his grandmother would have thought of his processing of local women, whom he painted, infected, made pregnant and then deserted, sometimes in that order. The grandson was doing what the grandmother would have despised, derided. But then the women on the receiving end weren’t Europeans, were they?

Flora travelled to Peru in an attempt to claim the inheritance of her birthright. In South America, with colonial heritage all around, she brushed shoulders with the rich, with a way of life she could only dream about in Europe. The experience galvanised her, created the resolution to seek change, a resolve that drove her through her remaining years, prompted her to write, to seek self-expression that might widen and convince her audience.

And so both grandmother and grandson pursue their own ideals, never consciously attaining them, of course, but the pursuit, like the life that bears it, is the point. The process is the end, the product merely existence.

In reviewing The Way To Paradise I find I have taken much more from the book than I thought. I had problems with the style in that its unidentified narrator constantly seemed to address Flora and Paul directly, referred to them as ‘you’, almost implying that they were acquaintances. On reflection, that might be part of the book’s point, in that celebrity renders those who possess it the friends of anyone. Both characters are thus part of our own common history. We already know them as Paul and Flora. In the case of Paul Gaugin, however, we meet a much lauded, selfish, self-obsessed, perhaps, painter whom everyone recognises. In Flora Tristan, Mario Vargas Llosa tells us, we have a member of the same family who ought to be known better than she is. In contrast with her grandson, however, her selflessness, her energy, her purity, paradoxically, identify her as a figure worthy of respect, worthy of history. The Way To Paradise was clearly worth its second read.

Today, Tyler R. Tichelaar of Reader Views is joined by Rick R. Reed, who is here to talk about his new novel, “IM”.

Rick R. Reed’s horror fiction has been referred to as “a harrowing ride through cutting-edge psychological horror” (Douglas Clegg, author of “The Attraction”), having “a knack for presenting the gruesome lower depths of a soul” (“New City”) and “brutally honest” (“Fangoria”). “Unzipped” magazine, in its October 2006 issue said, “You could call him the Stephen King of gay horror…”

Tyler: Welcome, Rick. I’m happy to have you here today. To begin, would you briefly tell us what “IM” is about?

Rick: “IM” is a suspense/horror novel about a serial killer who uses internet “hook-up” chat rooms to lure his victims. The title stands for instant message, and it is through these instant messages that the killer seduces his victims into inviting him into their homes for what they think will be an evening of romance, but what turns out to be an evening of brutal murder. The twist of the book is that the killer himself may be dead, a victim of a similar crime to the ones now being perpetrated. It takes a recently out and ousted gay Chicago police detective to try and discover the truth and to stop the killer–dead or not–before he kills again.

Tyler: Where did you first come up with the idea for “IM”?

Rick: I guess I must have been thinking about the potential peril gay men, especially, put themselves in by using these online hookup services, like Adam4Adam, M4M, etc. There’s a whole slew of them and finding sex online nowadays is as easy as ordering a pizza. And I’d be lying if I said I had never availed myself of the opportunity. But the thought crossed my mind at one point, “What if one of these people you’re inviting over wants to do you harm? Or even kill you? Who would know? How would anyone trace any connection from you to the killer?” That “what if…” is a big question for writers and it started me on the course for writing “IM”.

Tyler: A book like “IM” could not have been written even twenty years ago when the internet was not widespread. What advantages do you feel advances in technology have created for storytelling?

Rick: Well, I think the internet has many possibilities for storytelling. A while back, I read an excellent novel called “I.D.”, which was about a woman whose identity is stolen. I also believe there’s a young adult novel out told entirely in IMs. The cyberworld is a whole new setting!

Tyler: I know you’ve set “IM” and some of your other novels in Chicago, and you live in Chicago. Is there a reason why you choose to set the books in the town where you live?

Rick: Actually, Tyler, I lived in Chicago for eighteen years. In October of 2006, I moved to Miami, FL with my partner because of a job relocation/promotion. But to get back to your question, I set so much of my work in Chicago because the city was a true inspiration to me. I knew it so well it was easy to visualize the locales as I wrote. And the hardiness, the people, the beauty, and the vitality of Chicago all contributed to making me want to set what I wrote there.

Tyler: I have also read your book “Penance” which I enjoyed, but what really made “IM” stand out for me by comparison was your use of multiple first and third person narratives, and you allowed the serial killer to speak in first person. Why did you choose to alternate points-of-view and what did you feel were the benefits and drawbacks of doing so?

Rick: I like using different points of views first because it helps me get inside the character’s head and feel what he’s feeling, thus bringing it alive for the reader (sometimes I go to some pretty dark and dangerous places!). Second, I like to do it because I think it brings the reader much closer to the character I’m writing about. You know the scene in the movie “Halloween” where the little Michael Myer is going to kill his sister? You see this through his Halloween mask, and hear him breathing beneath the mask…and I think that’s what makes it more personal and terrifying for the viewer. In “IM”, we get to see things “up close and personal” from the killer’s and his victims’ perspectives. I like having that immediacy and bringing readers right into my own little nightmare world.

Tyler: One thing I found interesting about the serial killer in “IM” is that you gave the reader background information on him and why he became who he was. Even with showing his motivation, however, I’m not sure he ever became sympathetic. Did you feel sympathy for him at all?

Rick: Yeah, I do feel some sympathy for Timothy. You’ve read the book, so you know he endured some pretty horrible abuse growing up. I don’t really expect anyone to feel sympathy for him, but I hope they can at least have some understanding why he became the way he is. I think of people in terms of shades of gray and I think that makes them a lot more compelling as characters than one-dimensional stock villains or heroes.

Tyler: Rick, do you ever receive negative criticism about your novels because of their violent or sexual subject matter? And if so, how do you respond to those critics?

Rick: It’s interesting seeing some of the reviews for “IM” and how almost all of them warn that there’s pretty graphic sex and violence, yet all of them say it’s not gratuitous and it has to be there to advance the plot. That makes me feel good because I never put graphic stuff in simply to shock…it always has to pass the test: does it need to be there? Could the story work without it? I think my answer is always, “Yes, it has to be there.”

Tyler: That’s an excellent response, Rick. I agree it’s important that such elements as violence are used to advance the plot. Do you feel there is too much violence today in books, films and television? I am always surprised by the number of crime shows on television today. How do you think your books or such programs reflect American viewpoints today?

Rick: It’s hard to gauge how much is too much. I think the test I mentioned above is a good one: is the violence necessary? I think movies like “Hostel” and “Wolf Creek” take it over the top and for me personally, they go a little too far. The gore and violence just seem like they’re there for their own sake (remember that sentence for the correct usage of variations on “there”!).

Tyler: Do you feel your works exaggerate reality by being sensational, or is that the fun of writing within a horror or suspense genre?

Rick: Most of my stuff is the kind of horror that can really happen (save for a detour into the world of vampires occasionally), so I would say that I don’t think the crimes and the suspense are exaggerated. I think what makes them terrifying is that they could really happen. I have always been a true crime buff and it fascinates me how people can bring themselves to do horrible things (which I could never do). Writing about these things is a way of examining crime more closely.

Tyler: What really strikes me about your works and especially “IM” is that they focus on gay characters, and yet those gay characters are victims of sexual crimes. Do you feel your books reflect some sort of homophobic feeling that still exists in America, or perhaps the fears of the gay population about not being accepted by the mainstream?

Rick: I don’t think I consciously set out to write anything themed that way. As I’ve said before, I just set out to write a good page-turner, not a “cautionary tale” or to hold a mirror up to society. I suppose, though, if you peel back the layers of “IM”, there is an element of self-loathing that some gay men have and that’s what causes them to seek out highly risky behavior, even sometimes at the expense of their own lives.

Tyler: Why do you choose to write gay horror? Why not just a gay coming out story?

Rick: Gay is just because I am; I know those people best. I think my “gay” books could just as easily be straight ones…my first concern is with the human condition. My characters’ sexuality makes them more alive to me as I write them and hopefully more alive to the reader. Horror is because I have always been fascinated with the dark side of things and always loved the delicious tingle you can feel from fear (the kind of safe fear you can have between the covers of a book or on a movie screen, though!).

Tyler: How did you feel about “Unzipped” Magazine calling you the “Stephen King of gay horror”? Do you think that’s a fair comparison?

Rick: I love the marketing angle that someone comparing me to King has given me. And I love the comparison because he’s always been a favorite. I’ve been reading him since I was a boy and have read almost everything he’s written. That said, no, I don’t think we’re alike at all. Our styles, subject matter, and perspectives are very different. “Unzipped” picked King because he’s probably the most recognizable name in horror, not because we are actually all that alike as writers.

Tyler: You mentioned the film “Halloween” and of course, Stephen King. Which writers and/or films have been influences upon your writing?

Rick: Some of my favorite horror movies are “THE HAUNTING” and an Asian film called “AUDITION. In both of those, the sense of dread is pervasive and, at least with the former, much of the chilling stuff that happens occurs off-stage, which makes it even more frightening. As far as writers who’ve had an influence, the three that come to mind would not be classified as horror writers, but I really love their sense of suspense and the grotesque: Flannery O’Connor, Patricia Highsmith, and James Purdy. I think they have all influenced how I write characters.

Tyler: How difficult was it for you to publish a novel with gay characters in it? Being gay yourself, did the thought of becoming famous make you nervous?

Rick: It’s taken me a long time to accept myself as a gay man (I didn’t come out until I was 30) and now I’m happy with who I am and don’t care who knows it. I would be happy to be known as a “gay author” and be famous for it. Our community needs more “out and proud” people standing at the forefront, so people can see we come in all different shapes and sizes. I started out writing straight horror books and I was very lucky to have the first two picked up by a huge NY publisher like Dell and I suppose I could have continued down that path. But I wanted to write what I wanted to write and now I’m very comfortable publishing with a small GLBT house.

Tyler: How would you yourself describe your work? Is it horror, suspense, thriller, gay fiction, or do you prefer some other term?

Rick: I prefer the term, “good story.” I’m a storyteller and hope that the main thing I can avoid is boring people. If I can give them a couple or three hours of entertainment and escape from their usual world, I’m happy. If I can make them think a little along the way, that’s a bonus. I leave the labels to publishers and bookstores. They use them to make me easier to find. But I suppose if pressed I would say my work is suspense/horror, in that order.

Tyler: I understand your next novel will be about vampires. Are you leaning more toward writing horror?

Rick: No, if anything I’m leaning more toward suspense/mystery. But people often assume books are written chronologically in the same order they’re published. I wrote “In the Blood” some time ago, based on a short story I wrote even longer ago (and that was published in an anthology of historical vampire fiction called “Dark Destiny”). I love the whole romantic, savage mystique of vampires though and expect I’ll get around to exploring them more in my fiction.

Tyler: What do you feel is the attraction in recent years surrounding vampires in horror literature? Why does the vampire figure speak to modern audiences?

Rick:I don’t think the attraction for vampires is recent; it goes way back. I think we’ve always been fascinated by the possibility of immortal life…and I believe that’s what’s at the core of the appeal of vampire fiction.

The book is highly cinematographic in character and is cast as a tangle of almost separate stories acted out by characters that mingle along the way. People join and leave the train. There’s a love affair in a sleeper. A Jew is on his way to do deals in currants. A wanted criminal boards and leaves. A young thing is on her way to a job as a dancer. There’s a political refugee fomenting revolution in his homeland. There’s a lesbian journalist seeking to interview a famous popular writer. Stanboul Train is clearly not the eight fifteen from Pinner. Or maybe it is…

The action is both on and off the train as the characters’ stories weave together to create a novel. And it is possible to read the book as an almost linear story, where everyone, as in a soap opera, is pre-occupied with their present to the exclusion of all other time. But Graham Greene goes further than this and gives us vignettes of political, historical and social comment. Miss Warren’s interview with Savory, the writer, is an example.

Savory the writer is playing a part of being a writer. He has made his name selling books written from a Cockney point of view, at the time a euphemism for a down-to-earth, working class, perhaps therefore honest perspective. But Savory is unsavoury. His Cockney credentials are false, since he was born in beautiful Balham, far south-west of Bow Bells, and he claims an aspiration to achieve a re-creation of Chaucer’s spirit to counter the gloom and introspection of modern fiction. But Savory reveals himself to be “a man overworked, harassed by a personality which was not his own, by curiosities and lusts, a man on the edge of a nervous breakdown.” And Miss Warren, his interviewer, hates dealing with the impersonation that is stardom, the necessity to deal with another person as a commercial creation, a lie in the form of an advertisement. She earns a living from writing about such people, but yet she despises consumerism for its own sake, derides its pulpy products. She yearns to tell Savory that his books are rubbish, destined for the dustbin as fickle taste moves on, reorders consumer sentiment to ridicule its current eager choice.

And here, perhaps, we have Graham Greene revealing his own self-destructive, self-abusive darker side. He feels as unsavoury as Savory, producing these entertainments just to sell books, to make money, to indulge in his weaknesses. But what Greene’s deprecatory self-analysis apparently did not like to admit was that he was always doing more, much more than this.

Michael, a missionary priest, has just killed Munyasya. It was an accident, but Mulonzya, a politician, exploits the tragedy for his own ends. Boniface, a church worker, has just lost his child. He did not make it to the hospital in time, possibly because Michael went to the Mission to retrieve a letter from Janet, a teacher, and the priest’s neighbour. It is Munyasya who has the last laugh, however.
